Delivering Desks along the Sepik River Kaivola Community School

The Melanesian Foundation has for 25 years been building school desks at the Madang Resort initially using timber left over from various building projects, but as time went on a workshop was established and a target of 1000 desks per year resulted in more than 20,000 double school desks that have been manafactured and delivered to some of the most remotest community schools in Papua New Guinea.

The desks have all been manafactured in the MTS workshop in Madang and up until now most have been transported aboard the MTS Discoverer.  In future, some desks will be delivered aboard the Kalibobo Spirit or by alternative sea or road transport.

The various pictures shown on the website show the various means of transporting the desks by boat, road and air.

Most of the schools that have been recipients of this particular MF project are located along the Sepik River, in the Madang and Milne Bay Provinces.

In the early days prior to the formal establishment of the Melanesian Foundation, desks were made and simply distributed in lots of 10 and 20.  Apart from the actual number of desks, no specific records were kept of the recipient schools but each year up until 2006 we maintained a production level of 100 each month or minimum of 1000 double desks per year.
