LONG ISLAND

Picture above, and adjacent shows Matafun Health Centre which was refurbished by the Melanesian Foundation in 1989.  Above the picture shows Bok Aid Post built by the Melanesian Foundation and beside is just one of 30 wells that have ceased to provide potable water.

All on Long Island, a volcanic Island located 30 miles NE of Saidor or 67 miles east of Madang.

Long Island has a total population of an estimated 2,500 people who live in three main villages, but there are hamlets scattered around the Island.  Their main income is copra but in the past it has been difficult to transport their copra to Madang so the people largely exist off the land and fishing which is excellent.

Although Long Island is extremely fertile with an abundance of water from the crater known as Lake Wisdom the health and education facilities remain in very poor condition.  The community school at Matafun re-opened in 2007 after it had been closed for a number of years.  Another Community School at Malala closed and has yet to re-open.

The main health centre is Matafun with two smaller aid posts at Bok and Pt Kiau both constructed jointly by the Lutheran Church and the Melanesian Foundation.  All three health facilities have HF/SSB radios supplied by the Melanesian Foundation.

KWANGA HEALTH CENTRE, Middle Ramu District

The Kwanga Health Centre is located on the Ramu River and serves an estimated population of over 6,000 along the Ramu, Keram and Sogeram Rivers.   It is run by the Catholic Church under the direction of Fr Dario a well expected priest who spent 10 years in South Bougainville in the height of the conflict.

The Melanesian Foundation has assisted the Catholic Church with funds for both the Health Centre and the newly completed church.  The radio was also supplied and maintained by the Melanesian Foundation.

YANGARU PATROL, East Sepik

In 2006 an outbreak of what was thought to be whooping couph became a threat and Sir Peter flew in a team of medical experts from the National Department of Health and World Health Organisation to investigate the outbreak.  The picture shows Dr Wangi from the DoH and the WHO Doctor speaking to the people near Yangaru.

MIAK HEALTH CENTRE, Kar Kar Island

There is a page on the Miak Health Centre which together with Gaubin Hospital serves the health needs of the 50,000 who live on Kar Kar Island.
